WELCOME TO KENTFIELD

Location

Kentfield is just south of San Rafael and nestled at the base of Mt. Tam, bordered by Larkspur and Ross. Because the town of Kentfield is unincorporated, it is governed by the Marin County Board of Supervisors, who are known to pay close attention to the wishes of the residents, especially concerning development.

An upper middle class to wealthy community, Kentfield's name "Kentfield" is taken from the family of Albert Kent, a Chicago meat packer who, along with his wife Adaline, settled in the area in 1872. Adaline donated twenty-three acres of land for a community recreation center; which later became the site for the College of Marin, which is part of the California Community College system. Albert and Adaline's son William, who became a U.S. congressman and an ardent conservationist, donated Muir Woods as a national park.

The homes in this area are generally set well back from the streets which meander among pine, redwood and manzanita. The low-profile roofs of these spacious homes, mostly set on large lots, are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings and offer a wooded, country feeling.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,351 people in Kentfield.. There were 2,506 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.3% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% were non-families. The median income for a household in the CDP was $117,457, and the median income for a family was $154,673.

Public Schools

The Kentfield area is served by two public school districts; Kentfield School District for elementary and middle school, and Tamalpais Union High School District, for high school students who will attend Redwood High School in Larkspur.

Kentfield School District is a small district with two schools serving the communities of Kentfield and Greenbrae. The total enrollment of Kentfield District is just under 1,00.
Tamalpais Union High School District provides secondary school education to students coming from ten elementary districts in Marin County, including the Kentfield School District. It includes three comprehensive high schools, all of which have been designated as California Distinguished Schools, and two alternative schools.
