Marin County is renowned for its natural beauty and many liable towns. Below are a selection of southern Marin towns to explore: with detailed information about the location, demographics and schools that server each community. Belvedere
Situated on the Tiburon Peninsula at the southeastern base of Ring Mountain, between Richardson Bay and the Town of Tiburon, Belvedere consists of two "islands" and the lagoon (Belvedere Lagoon) between them. The larger of the two islands is Belvedere Island, and the smaller one is Corinthian Island, which is shared with Tiburon.

Corte Madera
Corte Madera is an incorporated town in Marin. In Spanish, Corte Madera means chopped wood. The area was famous for producing lumber out of redwood trees which went into the construction of the city of San Francisco.

Fairfax
Fairfax is another incorporated town in Marin. Only about 30 minutes from San Francisco, Fairfax is a fun, family-friendly little town. Another of Marin County’s liberal enclaves, the laid-back attitude and small town atmosphere make Fairfax a great place to raise a family. There is a sense of community here; downtown has a real shopping area with a grocery, informal restaurants, and it’s all within walking distance of many of the homes in the area.

Greenbrae
Greenbrae borders Larkspur, Kentfield and San Rafael, but the boundaries are a bit unclear. Greenbrae is centrally located and only 5 minutes from the San Rafael Bridge, making a handy commute for people working in the east bay, it is also just minutes away from the Larkspur ferry to San Francisco. The neighborhood shopping center, Bon Air, is a hub for central Marin shopping and has a full compliment of services including restaurants, apparel, gift and specialty shops, banking services, gas stations, and an excellent market. Marin General Hospital, the county’s larges medical facility, is also located in Greenbrae.

Kentfield
Kentfield is an affluent and wooded community off of Sir Francis Drake Blvd and just south of San Rafael. The population was 6,351 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code is 94904, and is shared with the neighboring community of Greenbrae.

Mill Valley
Mill Valley is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge. It began as a Mexican land grant to an Irish settler, John Thomas Reed, who became a Mexican citizen in 1834. He built the first saw mill in California, the "Old Mill" in Mill Valley. The population was 13,600 at the 2000 census.

Muir Beach
Muir Beach is located about 2 miles (3 km) from the entrance to Muir Woods National Monument, is a community and beach located 16.5 miles (26.6 km) North West of San Francisco in Western Marin County. As of the census of 2000, there were 295 people, 131 households, and 69 families residing in community. Muir Beach itself is about 1000 feet (305 m) long and 200 feet (61 m) wide.

Ross
Ross is a small, affluent and wooded incorporated town in Marin and adjacent to Kentfield off of Sir Francis Drake Blvd. The population was 2,329 at the 2000 census. The town is bordered by Kentfield and Greenbrae to the east, Larkspur to the south and San Anselmo to the north.

San Anselmo
San Anselmo is an incorporated town in Marin and located about 20 miles (32 km) north of San Francisco. Neighboring towns include San Rafael to the east, Fairfax to the west, and Ross to the south. Mount Tamalpais dominates the view to the south. The population was 12,378 at the 2000 census. Most of the downtown antique and boutique stores and restaurants, for which San Anselmo is well known, are along the banks of San Anselmo Creek.

San Rafael
San Rafael is the county seat of Marin County and the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the city's population was 55,550. San Rafael is known for many things. It's a hotbed for entertainment and technology, but also a beautiful historic city, home to some of Northern California's finest classic architecture and a lot of modern designs. The city's thriving downtown is famous for its wide variety of shopping spots and restaurants in character buildings, particularly in the colorful Fourth Street neighborhood.

Sausalito
Sausalito (from Spanish: sauzalito "small willow grove")has a population was 7,330 as of the year 2000 census. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car and ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, the city's industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as an artistic enclave, as a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and as a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Stinson Beach
Stinson Beach is an unincorporated community in Marin County on the coast and is about a 30-minute drive from the Golden Gate Bridge on California's Highway 1. It is near important attractions such as Muir Woods National Monument, Muir Beach, and Mount Tamalpais.

Tiburon
Tiburon is an affluent incorporated town in Marin and occupies most of the Tiburon Peninsula, which reaches south into the San Francisco Bay. The smaller city of Belvedere (formerly a separate island) occupies the south-east part of the peninsula and is contiguous with Tiburon. Tiburon is bordered by Corte Madera to the north and Mill Valley to the west, but is otherwise surrounded by the Bay.
