Location
San Rafael is the county seat of Marin County and the U.S. Census
Bureau estimated that the city's population was 55,550. San Rafael
is known for many things. It's a hotbed for entertainment and technology,
but also a beautiful historic city, home to some of Northern California's
finest classic architecture and a lot of modern designs. The city's
thriving downtown is famous for its wide variety of shopping spots
and restaurants in character buildings, particularly in the colorful
Fourth Street neighborhood.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 56,063 people, 22,371 households,
and 12,773 families residing in the city. The reported median income
for a household in the city was $60,994; the median reported income
for a family was $74,398.

Schools
San Rafael is served by two school districts.
San
Rafael City Schools administers six elementary schools, one middle
school, a combination elementary/middle school, two comprehensive
high schools, a continuation high school, and an independent study
high school.
Dixie
School District oversees four schools: Dixie Elementary, Mary Silveira
Elementary, Miller Creek Middle School, and Vallecito Elementary.
High school students in the Dixie School District attend Terra Linda
High School (which is part of the San Rafael City Schools district).
